Eating a burger is always delicious, isn’t it? Especially if the filling is caramelized onion. See how the idea becomes even better when the preparation can be simplified.

It is common for the most famous burger joints to add caramelized onions to their menu. This is because the item goes very well with meat and cheese burgers, providing an additional sweet and sour flavor to the dish.

Therefore, for lovers of homemade burgers, reproducing at home what is made in burger joints may seem like a lot of work, but the flavor is worth it.

In fact, you should know that it can be prepared in a very practical way, with few processes and an incredible result, very similar to a gourmet hamburger .

However, there are other, more time-consuming preparation processes, involving immersion in water so that the onion releases its acidity and produces a more intense sweet and sour result.

But don’t worry: the recipe we selected doesn’t require this time-consuming process and still guarantees a perfect result, with a sweet and sour taste, crunchiness and no high acidity.

How to make caramelized onions for burgers?

Before teaching you how to prepare the recipe, we have a simple but very necessary tip. Many people cry when cutting onions, right? However, you can avoid tears with a very simple trick: just soak the onion in cold water for 10 minutes.

This way, the gas that the stem releases during cutting will be released by the cold water, preventing tearing.

The other significant tip that will make a difference in the taste of your dish is while selecting the onion. The skin should be tight, smooth and unblemished, and should not be wilted or bruised since both of these conditions inhibit the process of caramelization.

That said, let’s prepare the best caramelized onion to enhance your homemade burger !

Caramelized onion recipe for burgers

  • Preparation time: 15 minutes
  • Yield: 2 servings

Ingredients

  • 2 medium onions
  • 1 teaspoon butter
  • ½ teaspoon brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of shoyu (soy sauce)

Preparation method

  1. Peel and cut the onions into rings of around 5 mm, that is, they should not be too thick or too thin. Separate each ring of the onion, that is, separate the rings after cutting.
  2. Melt the butter in a frying pan and then add the onion slices without overlapping each other.
  3. Lower the heat and let the onions fry for about five to seven minutes.
  4. When the onion is transparent, add the soy sauce and brown sugar and mix well. The onion rings must be separated during this process.
  5. Let the mixture simmer on low heat for a further 5 minutes. If the onion begins to stick before caramelization is achieved, add 2 tablespoons of water and stir.

Now, just enjoy!

How to store caramelized onions?

The flavor of the dish is so good that it is worth preparing it and storing it in preserves to eat in the next few days with any meal, simply adding vinegar to the pan before the onions begin to caramelize.

For the previous recipe, three tablespoons of white vinegar is enough to help with caramelization and, most importantly, to allow the onions to be stored as a compote.

Remember that the storage jar must be made of glass and the contents must be tightly sealed, as well as it must be stored in the refrigerator and does not need to be heated for consumption.

Now you must be wondering how many days caramelized onions last in the fridge, right? The contents, as long as stored in a suitable container, last on average from five days to a week, depending on how many times the fridge and the jar are opened.

In fact, if you notice any change in color or odor in the jam, do not consume the contents and then sterilize the refrigerator and the jar used to avoid cross-contamination.
